New Met Office UM and ECMWF IFS data available

New datasets available on JASMIN

We are delighted to announce the availability of two new datasets on JASMIN

1. Met Office UM MUMIP Indian Ocean dataset is now complete

This is available as a set of gridded data files of one hourly means on JASMIN. Data can be found at

/gws/nopw/j04/mu_mip/MUMIP_IO_UM_datasets/gridded_output

A list of variable names and how they relate to file and directory names are given here:

/gws/nopw/j04/mu_mip/MUMIP_IO_UM_datasets/var_names.txt

Many thanks to Kasturi Singh and Hugo Lambert (both University of Exeter) for producing and post-processing this dataset!

2. ECMWF IFS sensitivity tests

A complementary IFS MUMIP archive has been completed with two alternative surface forcings. Both new datasets consist of 5 days with two initialisations per day over the entire grid (10 x 44 000 simulations). Both datasets can be found ion the folder:

/gws/nopw/j04/mu_mip/MUMIP_IO_IFS_datasets/test-setup/data/archive

Firstly, a set of runs have been completed where both SST variation and prescribed ICON fluxes are simultaneously provided to each SCM. Edward Groot has analysed one initial time in depth. It shows highly correlated (and very similar) surface fluxes between IFS interactive flux calculations and the prescribed ICON forcing.

Output can be found in the subfolders named

IO.t00_SFC_FLUX_VAR_SST
IO.t12_SFC_FLUX_VAR_SST

Secondly, a set of runs where prescribed (time-varying) SST has been switched off for the first time, so that surface forcing is regulated purely by prescribed fluxes from ICON. This subset complements the default, with varying SST and IFS-driven fluxes, and the comprimised set with both variable SST forcing and prescribed ICON surface fluxes.

Note that due to an IFS SCM quirk, for this sensitivity test, pressure systems do not move (i.e. surface pressure is time-invariant, and, correspondingly, pressure at model levels is time-invariant).

The data are available in the following sub-folders:

IO.t12_SFC_FLUX_STATIONARY_DYNAMICS
IO.t00_SFC_FLUX_STATIONARY_DYNAMICS

Many thanks to Edward Groot (University of Oxford) for producing and post-processing these datasets!

Access

All MUMIP data can be found on JASMIN by those with access to the MUMIP group work space. Data can be found at the following path:

/gws/nopw/j04/mu_mip

If you would like access to the data, please firstly apply for an account on JASMIN (https://jasmin.ac.uk) and then request access to the mu_mip workspace through your account portal. Email Edward.Groot 'at' physics.ox.ac.uk or Hannah.Christensen 'at' physics.ox.ac.uk if you have any questions.
